I can’t believe I actually bought one. It’s been a few years since I’ve even been on one. I think the last time was at a party at Scott’s… I don’t even remember if I rode it very well… I’m sure I was drunk at the time.

Jenny and I went into a bike shop on Bathurst the other day so I could buy a light for my bike. I’ve been avoiding riding at night because of my lack of a light. I figured that it was about time that I picked one up. In the shop, there was this beautiful unicycle… I really don’t know how to descirbie how much I was attracted to it. It had a black speckled finish and had a nice fat tire. It was a 20″ Torker Unistar LX

I got the light and we left. Since then, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. On Friday, I found myself back in the bike shop asking about the price and if I could go for a test ride.

They almost went in to shock when they heard that I wanted to actually try it and that I hadn’t been on one for years. They figured I’d take one step on the thing and fall flat on my ass (or face). They made me wear a helmet. I was a little wobbly at first and the seat was too high, but I managed to stay on it and didn’t fall at all.

Well, I bought it and took it home. I didn’t have a chance to ride it again until today. I took it for a spin around the block and I can still ride even thought I need some practice. I find myself wanting to get the 26″ unicycle for ‘commuting’.

Check out the specs here.

I rode my first 100 km!

I know it’s only been a week or so (11 days 6 hours, 21 minutes) since I got the new bike and started riding again, but I can actually feel myself getting in to shape. I’m more flexable (I stretch before and after riding), stronger and I have more energy. Besides, the endorphins from riding are the best thing ever. Oh how I’ve missed them.

See my trip history here. They now includes route maps!

I guess I deserved it. You see, last May, I rode my bike to work, locked it up outside and left it there for almost a year. Outside, alone, vulnerable.

I’ve been missing it the last couple of weeks so I decide to get off my ass, pick up my bike, get it tuned up and start riding again. I went to get it then there it was… gone! I’ll miss that bike. We rode over 2 thousand kilometers together including a nice ride to St. Catherine’s on a fine Saturday in 2001.

I realized that this was a terrific opportunity to buy a new bike. My old one was good but it was rickety and had some issues. I got very excited about having a shiny new bike. I spent Saturday afternoon researching and dreaming. So, earlier this afternoon, I became the proud owner of a Trek 6000 (see pic). I went for a ride today and holy crap am I ever out of shape. Hopefully the shiny new bike will get me excited enough to ride a lot this summer. I’m looking forward to it.

I’ve decided to post my rides on the net. Click here to see my biking log.
