To Stargate or not to Stargate

Warm Glow of TV 2 Comments »

StargateI’m sort of excited about the new Stargate Universe show starting on October 2nd.  I like Robert Carlyle and I’m even interested to see what Lou Diamond Phillips can do with a regular TV character.

This begs the question… do I need to watch the other shows in the franchise to fully appreciate this new series?  I took a quick look in to it and to my suprise and horror, I discovered that there are 10 seasons of SG-1 with 214 episodes and 2 movies and 5 seasons of SG Atlantis with 100 episodes! This doesn’t even include the animated series that isn’t strickly considered canon.

Geez.  That is a lot of time debt to get caught up. Any Stargate fans or haters out there?  Is it even worth it?

Some New TV This Fall

Warm Glow of TV Comments Off

It’s that time of year again… time for TV to come back after a nice vacation.  Some old favourites will bless our senses with familiar friends and some new appearances come to tickle our imaginations.  Here’s a few of the new shows I’m looking forward to.

Bored To Death Bored To Death
I tend to like HBO for TV. This one stars Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, Funny People) and that droll dude guy from The Hangover (Zack Galifianakis). Looking foward to it.
Premier: Sunday, September 20th, 9:30 PM

Flash Forward Flash Forward
Everybody on the planet falls unconscious for to minutes, seventeen seconds. While out, they each see their own future six months out. Interesting…
Premier: Thursday, September 24th, 8:00 PM

Stargate Universe Stargate Universe
I’ve never caught the Stargate bug but this one seems like a good gateway series. Robert Carlyle, Ming-Na and Lou Diamond Phillips.
Premier: Friday, October 9th, 9:00 PM

V V
I remember watching the original mini-series as a kid and very much enjoying it. I’m glad they’re taking a crack at a re-imagination. Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet from Lost)
Premier: Tuesday, November 3rd, 8:00 PM

Battlestar Gallactica

Warm Glow of TV Comments Off

Battlestar Gallactica is by far the best show on TV! That’s it, it’s all over, BSG wins.

There were two moments in the most recent episode Exodus, Part 2 that really nailed it for me. The friggin’ Gallactica jumped into the atmosphere of New Caprica to launch Vipers then jumped away just before crashing into the settlement… trailing fire the whole way!!! A finer moment in Sci-Fi I have not seen. And, I almost cried when Col. Tigh poisoned his wife over the betrayal of the humans.

Oh, and don’t forget that the Pegasus jumpted in to help taking out three basestars having to sacrifice itself to do so. She was a good ship… and will be missed.

Anyway… I know I’m gushing but damnit, Jim, I can’t wait until next Saturday.
